Can you believe it is already October. This is one of my favorite months. I love fall and I love Halloween. I enjoy seeing all the Halloween decorations in stores. I always come away with so many inspirations.
Each year I like to make at least one new Halloween door hanger. Last year I made a really cute Trick or Treat Wood Door Hanger. You can check out the post here for all the pictures and tutorial. This year I decided on a Halloween Spider Door Hanger. I’ll admit, I usually am drawn to something with a witch, witch hat or witch legs, but for some reason, I chose to make this spider. Who knows, a witch wreath could be in the making as well.
We started off with the wood. We had 2 pieces of 2′ x 2′ plywood boards that were 1/2″ thick. We used one board for the larger diameter circle and the other one for all the smaller circles. You can use any kind of wood boards you want. We just had these in our stash. I am going to include some affiliate links to the products we used, just to make it easier for you to find the items you need if you decide to try this project yourself.
To start off. we needed a large circle. So we used this nifty little gadget to get a perfectly round circle. If you need something to draw circles, then I highly recommend this.

Since this was going to be used as a door hanger, we decided on making the larger circle 22 inches in diameter and the smaller circle 18 inches in diameter for the body of the spider.

Then for the eyes, we went with 4 inches and 2 inches. You can change up the sizes to make it work for your space.
We used a jigsaw to cut all the circles. Well, I didn’t do the jigsawing….but I did do the watching. Ha!

Once I had all these cut out, we sanded all the rough edges down. This sander works great for small jobs like this. It makes the job quick and easy.

Then painted all them black except for the circles that will be used for the center of the eyes and those got painted white. I used black and white acrylic paints for all the pieces.
We let them dry overnight then sanded the edges with just sandpaper and not the sander just to give it more of a weathered look. As you can see, I had a little help with the painting and the sanding.

Here is another picture of how we sanded the edges down.

Once everything was sanded, I wiped each of the circles with a cloth to remove any excess sanding dust.
We decided to add the legs to the spider and a hanger before we glued the other pieces on. It was easier to get the legs and hanger attached on the larger piece of wood before gluing the other pieces to the front.
We cut 8 pieces of wire, approximately 12 inches long then used a top of a small bottle to make the circle on the end of the leg.
We just eyeballed the center of the spider body and attached the legs.

Here is how we attached the wire legs on the back. We used a staple gun to secure the wire to the wood.

I think if we made another one, we would drill small holes in the edge of the wood and install the wires into the wood and secure with glue. As with any craft, you always learn how to do it better the second time around.
Next we added the hanger. I wanted the hanger to be twisted, so we took two longer pieces of the same wire we used for the spider legs and twisted it around until we got the look we wanted. Then secured it with staples as well.

After the legs and hanger were attached, we laid the largest diameter circle down on a flat surface, then glued the back of the second largest circle and positioned it on top of the larger circle with the edges of the circles meeting up. Hope this makes sense. I always us this glue for my projects. I find that it dries clear and really keeps things in place.

Once we had glued everything, we let it dry overnight and then added the eyes. We have found that it is the best to allow all your pieces to dry good once glued.
Now it is time to add the eyes. We let the white circle of the eyes hang over the edge of the second larger circle to give it some dimension. Then added the black circles to finish the eyes.
Here are all the pieces glued together.

Again, we let all the pieces dry overnight. Then sprayed the entire piece with a polyurethane sealant. That way it can be used indoors or outdoors.
The next day, I finished up the door hanger by adding a ribbon to the hanger. I wanted to give it some color since the entire piece was black and white.
I used some cute wired Halloween ribbon to make a bow. I purchased all the ribbon from Amazon. Here is the 6-roll bundle I purchased in case you are needing some ribbon. I love using wired ribbon. It holds up better and makes better bows.

And here is the finished look…..all ready for hanging on your front door to greet all your trick-or-treaters. Or you can hang it anywhere you want.
